Ciara O’Kelly is an Irish artist currently living and working in New York. O’Kelly stages videos using a 3D modelling program which are predominately realised as part of large scale video installations. Through the use of simulations, she strives to curate objects and environmental systems in an effort to achieve a desired perfection, manipulating physics and textures which often reveal the staging effects and miscommunications arising within these technologies. Her work is driven by systems identified between consumers and corporations drawing from trends present within our current highly capitalist and digitised society.

O’Kelly is interested in the methodology required to maintain a façade, one which is framed by the corporation and exercised through “sponsored” familiar, yet ominous lifestyle content. As a result, she explores the ideology of individuals mediating through technology to maintain psychological fulfilment and generically self-improve. Furthermore, O’Kelly is particularly interested in the individual’s dual role as both a consumer and product within systems of data capitalism and its free labour nature.

Ciara O’Kelly graduated from the National College of Art & Design in Dublin, Ireland with a First Class Honours BFA in 2017. She was the recipient of the Digital Media Graduate Award at Fire Station Artists’ Studios and received the Young Artist Development Award from South Dublin County Council in 2018 & 2019. O’Kelly’s work has been exhibited internationally, in countries including the UK, USA, Sweden and Netherlands. She recently concluded a residency awarded by Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado.
